ENT Diseases in Children and Adults: Diagnosis and Treatment Methods
We would like to provide an overview of the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) diseases that are frequently seen in children and adults. We would like to share with you the definition, scope, incidence and effects of ENT diseases on quality of life.
ENT Diseases Common in Children
ENT diseases frequently encountered in childhood are usually caused by infections and anatomical differences. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are critical for the healthy development of children.
Acute otitis media (middle ear infection): Symptoms include earache, fever and restlessness. Diagnosis is usually made by physical examination. Treatment methods include antibiotics, painkillers and tube application in recurrent cases.
Tonsillitis (tonsillitis): Causes are usually bacterial or viral infections. Symptoms may include sore throat, difficulty swallowing and fever. Diagnosis is confirmed by throat culture. Treatment methods are antibiotics and tonsillectomy (removal of tonsils) surgery in chronic cases.
Adenoid hypertrophy (enlarged adenoids): Symptoms include mouth breathing, snoring, and sleep apnea. Diagnosis is made with endoscopy. Treatment is usually adenoidectomy (removal of the adenoid).
Sinusitis: There are acute and chronic forms. Symptoms include nasal congestion, facial pain, and headache. Diagnosis is supported by CT scan. Treatment methods include antibiotics, nasal sprays, and surgery in resistant cases.
Laryngomalacia: A congenital condition seen in babies. Its symptom is respiratory distress. Diagnosis is made with laryngoscopy. Most cases resolve spontaneously, but rarely surgical intervention may be required.
In all these diseases, the doctor determines the diagnosis and treatment method. You should never apply a treatment yourself without consulting your doctor.
Common ENT Diseases in Adults
ENT diseases seen in adults can be caused by various reasons such as environmental factors, lifestyle, and aging. These diseases can significantly affect the quality of life.
Rhinitis (cold/flu): There are allergic and non-allergic types. Symptoms include runny nose, sneezing and nasal congestion. Diagnosis can be made with allergy tests. Treatment methods include antihistamines, nasal sprays and immunotherapy.
Sinusitis: There are acute and chronic forms. Symptoms include nasal congestion, facial pain and headache. Diagnosis is supported by CT scan. Treatment methods include antibiotics, nasal sprays and surgical intervention in resistant cases.
Vertigo (dizziness): Causes include Meniere's disease and BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). Diagnosis is made with hearing tests and balance tests. Treatment methods include medications, maneuvers and, in some cases, surgery.
Hoarseness and laryngitis: Causes include nodules/polyps and reflux in the vocal cords. Diagnosis is made with laryngoscopy. Treatment methods include voice therapy, medications and surgical intervention.
Hearing loss: Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) and noise-induced hearing loss are common. Diagnosis is made with audiometry. Treatment methods are hearing aids and cochlear implants.
In all these diseases, the doctor determines the diagnosis and treatment method. You should never apply a treatment yourself without consulting your doctor.
Diagnostic Methods of ENT Diseases
Correct diagnosis of ENT diseases is vital for determining appropriate treatment methods. Advanced technological methods offer fast and accurate diagnosis.
Physical examination: It includes a detailed examination of the ENT region. The doctor manually examines the ears, inside the nose, throat and lymph nodes in the neck.
Endoscopy: It allows the nose, throat and larynx to be viewed with a camera. This method is especially effective in diagnosing tumors and other abnormalities.
Audiometry: Determining the level of hearing with hearing tests. The type and degree of hearing loss is determined by measuring the reactions to sounds at different frequencies.
Tympanometry: Measuring middle ear pressure. This test is used especially in the diagnosis of conditions such as otitis media and eustachian tube dysfunction.
Allergy tests: Determination of substances that cause allergic reactions with skin prick tests and blood tests (RAST). These tests are important in the diagnosis of conditions such as allergic rhinitis and sinusitis.
Imaging methods: Detailed imaging of the ENT region is provided with methods such as CT scan and MRI. These methods are especially used in the diagnosis of sinusitis, tumors and other structural abnormalities.
Treatment Methods for ENT Diseases: Drug Therapy
Drugs are widely used in the treatment of ENT diseases to relieve symptoms and control infections. However, it should be remembered that drug therapy may not be suitable for every patient and its side effects should also be taken into consideration.
